Ladytron and Cansei de Ser Sexy

Last night I went to see Ladytron and Cansei de Ser Sexy at the TLA. I took a million pictures and videos (which I’ll be uploading throughout the next few days, check back), it was much fun.

Cansei De Ser Sexy
CSS
When I first got there I was surprised and disappointed because there weren’t more than 40 people total and it was close to start time. By the time Cansei de Ser Sexy came to stage that number had not changed and even still, they manage to kick ass and get everybody dancing and put on a really great show. Lovefoxx is so full of energy! CSS is a an electro-clash band from my hometown, Sao Paulo; I had never had a chance to see them live before but had been listening to for a long time. Though their lyrics are 95% in English, I had a blast singing along to the bits in Portuguese because people around me looked very puzzled. I like puzzling.

Ladytron
Ladytron
Ladytron was cool (aren’t they always?) and their set was a good fan pleaser. They played everything I was hoping they would (Playgirl, He Took Her To a Movie, Blue Jeans, Sugar, Destroy Everything You Touch) and confirmed my theory that nobody in the band can smile. How they do it, I don’t know. Seriously, not only no smiles, but no other expressions either. It really does fit their style, but it’s just plain weird. Seeing them live also reinforced my previous observation about Helen Marnie looking a hell lot like Emily Blunt.

I had a great time – I guess CSS’s enthusiasm really got me going in a way that Ladytron’s lack thereof sort of disappointed me (perhaps too hard to mood-swing on Q?). Still, if you can catch them in other cities, don’t miss CSS, you’ll be pleasently surprised.

My kingdom for a sfiha

It is rare for me to crave for specific types of food that I can’t get, but today I’ve been dying for sfihas. Back in Sao Paulo, I could get one 24-7, thanks to Habib’s, now I can only wish (I know I’m not competent to replicate what I want in my kitchen. I’ve tried and became even more disappointed).

I walked around town and searched for it online and I couldn’t find a single place in Philadelphia or surrounding areas that serves sfihas. Does anybody know where I can find Sfihas? If you don’t know what they are, they are delicious little circles of dough topped with a mixture of ground beef, onions, tomatoes and mint. When they come out of the oven you can smell them a mile away and in Brazil, it’s costumary to squeeze some lime juice on top, which makes perfect, devine.

My mouth is watering. I’m seriously considering driving up to DC tomorrow…

On a side note, I resolved my problem with videos stuck in my camera with a SanDisk Imagemate 5-in-1 card reader. You can check the videos I’m gradually uploading on You Tube.

Once More, With Feeling!

This is for my friend Bill “The Button” DeRouchey who enthusiasticaly emailed me when he found out I was going to the Buffy Vampire Slayer “Once More, With Feeling” Sing-Along. Bill, it was a blast!

The photo set will speak for itself:

I think I was in heavenGlory!Best Costume Prize

…but I do want to point out that we got a goodie bag with instructions on things to do at specific parts of the episode – awesome. It was very Rocky-Horror-Picture-Show-esque. Everyone’s favourite was to shout out “shut up Dawn” every time she said *anything*, which made a great episode even better.

There were bubbles blown while Tara’s was, em, “spread beneath her willow tree”, mustard packets waved around when “they got the mustard out!” and an authentic Sunnydale parking tickets (we were all wearing underwear though. Well, I was). People were surprisingly in tune and every song got a great ovation.

Prizes for best costumes, most enthusiastic fans through the night and “Who wants to be a Slayer” trivia game really added up to the fun. Prizes included Buffy fanfic and skeletons, among others. They are doing this again on the 30th and as nerdy as it sounds doing this twice in a row, I’m seriously contemplating the possibility…

“Bunnies, bunnies it must be bunnies!…”

If this report made no sense to you, don’t fear. Get your Buffy on and catch up.
